Shop.org's inaugural Strategy and Innovation Forum attracted a diverse crowd of online and multi-channel professionals with a goal of helping our members sort through the numerous opportunities available, fine-tune current efforts, and determine which innovations should fit into growth strategies for the not-so-distant future . This event offered attendees numerous opportunities to address these challenges including thought provoking keynote presentations, inspiring panel discussions, rewarding networking opportunities, and key meetings with solution provider partners in the exhibit hall.
Day 1 kicked off with author and WOMMA founder Andy Sernovitz discussing how to factor Word-of-Mouth-Marketing into the ROI equation, and many commented that this was one of the most valuable presentations in recent memory. Andy was followed by Shop.org Board member and QVC Senior Vice President Bob Myers, who showed numerous real-life examples of innovations that QVC has implemented to create a true multi-media social shopping environment. This was followed by a moderated Q & A session with Rob Schmults from GSI Commerce
The afternoon featured two concurrent sessions. The first track was titled “Growth Strategies for Long Term Success” and covered such topics as innovations in implementing UGC in a multi-channel environment, selecting the right eCommerce Platform for your business, and monetizing the Long Tail. The second track in the afternoon was “Innovations to Increase Sales and Customer Engagement” and hit on such topics as the changing face of the internet and eCommerce, 21 st Century email, social shopping, and widgets and gadgets. Each track featured two sessions of roundtable discussions that allowed our attendees to discuss many of these topics with speakers and other industry experts in a small group environment. We also offered our attendees individual tutorial sessions with Web 2.0 expert Ethan Holland in the exhibit hall where retailers asked him for guidance on such topics as Web 2.0 implementation, measurement, and tips for success.
The second day of the event began with FAO Schwarz CEO Ed Schmults discussing how small to medium sized retailers can drive innovation while enhancing long term brand equity. Ed was followed by CEO of Airborne Mobile Andy Nulman examining the current state of mobile marketing and whether the mobile revolution is a fast approaching reality or a post-modern nightmare. The “Strategy” track continued in the afternoon was dedicated to international expansion examining the opportunities overseas and how to successfully execute in international market. The “Strategy” track covered such provocative topics as the future of alternate payments and retailer applications of Second Life and 3D Virtual Worlds.
